In ayah 261 in Surah Al- Baqarah in the Quran, “Sab’aa Sanabil” means seven ears. Here Allah tells us that spending wealth in the way of Allah is like a grain of corn that grows 7 ears and each ear has hundreds of grains. Allah gives more to whoever He pleases. Meaning that the charity that you give plants like a seed, that seed grows into a tree, the tree has more fruits, and each fruit has hundreds of seeds. Inspired by this beautiful and apt analogy, Sister Samah Al-Awlaqi, the founder, has named this initiative, Sab’aa Sanabil.
My name is Samah. I am from Yemen, a beautiful country that is south of Saudi Arabia. I moved and now live in Canada, but I have so many fond memories of Yemen from my childhood and growing up there. I love my country even more so because I have a lot of my family there, the people there are very kind, and they are always so open to welcoming tourists and even refugees from places like Palestine and Somalia. Prophet Muhammed ﷺ also mentioned Yemen in a hadith:
أَتَاكُمْ أَهْلُ الْيَمَنِ هُمْ أَرَقُّ أَفْئِدَةً وَأَلْيَنُ قُلُوبًا الإِيمَانُ يَمَانٍ وَالْحِكْمَةُ يَمَانِيَةٌ
The people of Yemen have come to you and they are more gentle and soft-hearted.
Belief is Yemenite and Wisdom is Yemenite .. (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
Currently, there is a war going on in our country and situation is getting worse every day. Things like no electricity, clean water, hygiene, diseases, and food deprivation are at an all-time high, and so many people are suffering because of the war.
Even before starting Saba'a Sanabil, we used to help some people in Yemen from whatever we could manage on our own. Though we tried our best, it wasn’t enough because there are just so many people who are in dire need. That is when my mother, who lives in Yemen and finds it heartbreaking to see the condition of people around her, asked me if I can reach out to people here to help. This led to the creation of our non-profit initiative, Sab’aa Sanabil in Ramadan 2022.
The help of our community here and a small effort from all of us, showed us how helping even a little, would be a total game changer for the Yemeni people. During the nights of Ramadan when organisers would send food, they found so many other issues happening to people besides the food. There were many other sorts of struggles when it came to medication, operation funds, warm blankets, and many more. At the moment, our target is to help the people in Yemen with their basic survival (food, medicines, clothes etc.) and handle issues that they are dealing with on a daily basis in the best way we can.
